Umar is a solicitor in the Mental Health department and has been since joining TV Edwards in November 2020.
Specialising in assisting patients detained under the Mental Health Act, Umar has been an accredited member of the Law Society Mental Health Scheme since 2017. This means he is specially trained in this technical area of law to provide representation before the Mental Health Tribunal and he does so to a high standard. He regularly undertakes a reaccreditation (every 3 years) to ensure he remains competent to the high standard required by the Law Society in this specialist field. Much of his work consists of case preparation and advocating for his clients before Mental Health Tribunals. Umar’s work ranges from representing clients detained under civil sections, forensic sections and clients subject to community sections. He is also frequently appointed to assist clients who lack capacity to instruct a solicitor.
Umar always tries to adopt a personalised approach to each case and endeavours to explore all options to best achieve his client’s instructions. His empathetic and determined nature makes clients feel at ease from the outset and confident in his abilities. He ensures that his clients are kept fully informed about their case and provides practical advice throughout to best assist them and to progress their cases effectively. This has included successfully challenging decisions made by the Mental Health Tribunal. He has competently argued on a point amounting to an error in law by the Mental Health Tribunal leading the decision being set aside. This highlights his keen attention to detail and knowledge of the law.
Umar started practising Mental Health Law in 2014 as a paralegal and qualified as a Mental Health Solicitor in 2019. He has always had a particular interest in this area of law as it involves assisting some of the most vulnerable in our society. He takes pride in ensuring that his client’s right to liberty is always respected and he will fight tirelessly for the benefit of them.
